Every August, the whole family would pile into the station wagon and drive up to a cabin on Lake Michigan. Rose remembers the smell of pine trees mixing with fresh lake water.

"Daddy would carry me on his shoulders down to the dock," she said, eyes bright. "The water was so cold it made your bones ache, but we didn't care."
